Clorox Cyberattack Fallout: Clean-up in Aisle Tech
ATTENTION: Business Owners, Leadership, and Board of Directors!
Clorox, a well-known company famous for its cleaning products like wipes and popular brands such as PineSol, FreshStep cat litter, and Hidden Valley Ranch, is facing some serious issues due to a cyberattack that hit them on August 14. They recently shared the news with the public on September 18, 2023. Basically, they’re saying, “Hey, we’re still dealing with the fallout of this cyberattack, and it’s going to affect our finances for this quarter.”
Here’s what went down: Clorox noticed some suspicious activity in their computer systems, so they took fast action, shutting down certain systems to deal with the problem. Unfortunately, this attack messed up a big part of their tech setup, causing all sorts of issues for their regular operations. Right now, they’re doing things manually, the old-fashioned way, manually processing orders. But they’re hopeful they can get back to their usual automated processes starting around September 25.
But here’s where it gets tricky: This disruption could lead to delays and shortages of Clorox products on store shelves.
Now, let’s zoom out and look at the bigger picture. Clorox isn’t alone in facing cyberattacks. Cybercriminals are hitting businesses of all sizes, causing a lot of trouble. In fact, statistics show that in 2021, 43% of cyberattacks targeted small businesses. That’s a big deal because small businesses often don’t have the same level of cybersecurity defenses as larger ones.
Clorox is working hard to fix their tech issues and bring back those offline systems. They’re also crunching the numbers, and it doesn’t look good for this quarter. Due to the delays and shortages, they expect their profits to take a big hit. But they’re not sure about the long-term effects, like how it’ll impact their finances for the whole fiscal year because they’re still trying to fix everything.
When it comes to figuring out who’s behind this cyberattack, that’s still a mystery, and Clorox hasn’t shared which of their brands got hit the hardest.
And as for cybersecurity experts, they’re not spilling the beans either. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), the folks responsible for online safety at the government level, aren’t saying much. They’re basically pointing fingers at Clorox and saying, “Ask them about it.”
